How to Create a Paid Channel (Step-by-Step, 2026)

This guide takes a private channel and turns it into a subscription product: subscribers pay, a bot lets them in, renewals happen on their own, and anyone who stops paying is removed without you lifting a finger. Nothing here needs code, and the whole thing fits into an hour, usually less.
The steps use Subscriby on Telegram, the first platform it connects to (Discord is next), but the shape is the same on any membership bot: you bring your own bot and your own channel, connect the ways your audience pays, and publish a plan.
What You Need Before Starting
- A Telegram account that is an admin of the channel you want to charge for. If the channel does not exist yet, create it first and make it private.
- At least one way to get paid: a Stripe account for cards, a PayPal business account, a CoinPayments account for crypto, Razorpay for India, Paystack for Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, or nothing at all if you plan to start with Telegram Stars.
- A free Subscriby account. The Free plan runs three projects at a 10% transaction fee with no monthly charge, so you can go live before spending anything.
Step 1: Create Your Own Bot with BotFather
Your subscribers will never see Subscriby. They talk to a bot that carries your name, and you create that bot yourself in two minutes.
- Open a chat with @BotFather in Telegram and send
/newbot. - Give it a display name. This is what subscribers see, so make it your brand: "Alpha Signals VIP", not "test bot 3".
- Give it a username ending in "bot", for example @alphasignals_vip_bot.
- BotFather replies with an API token that looks like
1234567890:AAFabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. Copy it somewhere safe; you will paste it in Step 3.
Owning the bot matters more than it looks. If you ever move to another platform, your members keep talking to the same bot, and the start link you have shared everywhere keeps working.
Step 2: Make the Channel Private and Give the Bot Admin Rights
Open the channel's settings and set its type to Private. Telegram shows a permanent invite link for private channels; do not share it anywhere. Access has to be controlled by the bot, not by a link anyone can forward.
Now add your new bot to the channel as an administrator with two rights: inviting users via link and banning users. The first lets the bot issue a fresh single-use link to each paying member; the second lets it remove members whose subscription has ended. Everything else can stay off.
Step 3: Connect the Bot to Subscriby
- Sign in to Subscriby and create a project. A project is one business: its bot, its channels and groups, its plans, its members and its payment methods, kept separate from any other project you run.
- Paste the bot token. Subscriby checks it against Telegram in a second or two and the bot is live.
- Go to Resources and add your private channel. Subscriby lists every channel and group the bot is an admin of; if yours is missing, the bot is not yet an admin there.
Step 4: Connect the Ways Your Audience Pays
Under Payment Methods, switch on whatever fits your audience. Members see every enabled method at checkout and pick their own.
Stripe covers cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay in most of the world. Click Connect, sign in to Stripe, authorise, and you are back in the dashboard. Stripe's own fee, around 2.9% + $0.30 per successful card payment in the US, is charged by Stripe on your Stripe account and is separate from Subscriby's transaction fee.
PayPal suits members who would rather not type a card number. Skrill is common in parts of Europe and among traders.
Razorpay gives Indian members UPI, local cards and net banking. Paystack does the same for cards and bank rails in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. CeyPay covers Sri Lanka. These are the methods a card-only setup silently loses.
CoinPayments takes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, USDT and USDC. Each payment gets its own generated address, so members never see your personal wallet.
Telegram Stars need no account at all. Members pay with Stars inside Telegram and never leave the app. Telegram sets the exchange rate and pays you out through its own process, so price a Stars plan with that spread in mind and treat Stars as one option beside a card gateway rather than the only one.
Access codes are not a gateway but solve the same problem for members who pay by bank transfer, in cash at an event, or whom you want to let in as a gift. Generate a code in the dashboard, hand it over however you like, and the bot admits whoever redeems it for the period you set.
Step 5: Create Your Plans
Under Plans, create the first one. A plan is a price, a billing cycle and the resources it unlocks.
- Name: what members see, such as "Monthly Access" or "VIP Annual".
- Price and currency: members can also pay in their own currency at the live exchange rate.
- Billing cycle: daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or a one-time payment for a fixed period or for life.
- Trial: an optional free period before the first charge, with or without a card up front.
- Resources: the channel this plan opens. A plan can open several channels and groups at once.
A setup that works for most channels: a monthly plan at $25 and an annual plan at $240, which is $20 a month for a year's commitment. If you sell scheduled access rather than open-ended membership, a match-day briefing or a weekend workshop, the Passes Addon lets you sell a pass to a window you schedule, and members are admitted when it opens and removed when it closes.
Step 6: Share the Bot's Start Link
Every project has a deep link into your bot, something like t.me/alphasignals_vip_bot?start=alpha, and a hosted portal page listing your plans for people who arrive from a browser. Put the link in your free public channel's pinned message, your bio on other platforms, and anywhere else your audience finds you.
A visitor who taps it is greeted by your bot, shown the plans, taken through payment on the method they choose, and handed a single-use invite link the moment the payment clears. The link works once and only for them.
Step 7: Test the Whole Flow Before You Announce It
Subscribe to your own channel first. Stripe's test card, 4242 4242 4242 4242 with any future expiry and any CVC, walks through a real checkout without moving money while the gateway is in test mode. Check that:
- the bot sends an invite link right after payment,
- the link adds you to the private channel,
- you appear under Members in the dashboard with the right plan and renewal date.
If a step fails, the cause is almost always the bot's admin rights in the channel or a resource that was not added to the plan.
What Runs on Its Own Once You Are Live
From here the bot does the daily work. Renewals are charged on the cycle, failed payments are retried and the member is told how to fix their card, and anyone whose subscription ends is removed within minutes of expiry. Members who message the bot with a question land in your support inbox with their plan and payment history beside the thread, and your reply reaches them in Telegram under your own name.
What you will look at from time to time: new members and renewals on the dashboard, failed payments under Subscriptions, and churn by month. If cancellations spike, something changed in the content or its cadence, and the numbers will show you when.
One thing worth knowing before you need it: if Telegram ever restricts your bot, your channel or your account, Subscriby's Disaster Recovery Program notices when a sale or a join fails, keeps probing, alerts you, and lets you move to a replacement bot or channel from the dashboard while every paying member is re-admitted automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change a plan's price later?
Yes. Existing members keep the price they signed up at until you change their subscription individually; new members pay the new price. That is how you reward early supporters while raising prices for everyone who comes after.
Can I sell lifetime access with a one-time payment?
Yes. Create a one-time plan with no end date. The member pays once and stays until you remove them.
How do I stop taking new members without kicking out existing ones?
Unpublish the plan. Current members keep their access and their renewals; nobody new can buy. Publish it again when you want to reopen.
What about members who paid me by bank transfer?
Generate an access code for the period they paid for and send it to them. They redeem it with the bot and are admitted like any other member.
How quickly is an expired member removed?
Within minutes of the expiry time, not at midnight. Expiries are processed continuously.
Do I have to run a website?
No. The bot and the hosted portal page are the whole storefront. You can add a website later and link to the same start link from it.
